Bath - Beijing - Cincinnati - Los Angeles - Munich - Singapore - Sydney—On November 18th, 2020 the Global Seminar on Contests & Conflict was launched with Dominic Rohner, Université de Lausanne and Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), as the first speaker.
He presented his research on the drivers of democratic transition in a world when ethnic rather than class conflicts are dominant, a joint workwith Jeremy Laurent-Lucchetti and Mathias Thoenig.
Digital Kick-off
This Seminar represented the digital kick-off for the new Global Network on Research on Contests & Conflict, which was founded and is supported by an international group of researchers from six countries and four different continents who are working on contests and/or conflict in its various areas. These are processes in which individuals or groups compete for winning scarce and valuable resources, making costly efforts themselves and sacrificing them, whether or not they end up winning the resources. Such processes can be found in many and very different areas of life. To name just a few examples: sporting or professional tournaments, prize competitions, election campaigns, military conflicts, court cases or patent races.
The next Global Virtual Seminar on Contest & Conflict will take place on December 2, 2020 at 6. p.m. (PT). Stefano Barbieri from Tulane University will present his paper titled “Momentum and Heterogeneity in Contests”, a joint work with Marco Serena from the MPI for Tax Law and Public Finance and a working paper of the Institute.
