Dr. Johanna Stark Awarded Otto Schmidt Prize

Dr. Johanna Stark, a senior research fellow at the Institute, has been awarded the Otto Schmidt Prize for publications in the field of international law.

In a virtual award ceremony held on 16 December 2020, Professor Dr Felix Hey, publisher of the Dr. Otto Schmidt publishing house, officially granted the prize for Stark's article "Distributive Justice as a Principle of International Tax Law" published in StuW 1/2019. In her work, the jurist explores the question of whether international tax law can and should serve as a political tool to compensate resource inequality beyond national borders. According to the press release, the jurist has succeeded in an outstanding way in "combining the strands of knowledge of political philosophy and jurisprudence and their two different approaches to the global justice debate".

Awarded by the “Foundation for Europeanization and Internationalization of Law” of the Otto Schmidt publishing house, the prize honors long-standing jurists for their work and for introducing young academics to the field, as well as young academics for particularly outstanding publications in academic journals.

Besides Dr. Johanna Stark, Prof. Dr. Juliane Kokott, Advocate General at the European Court of Justice and Titular Professor at the University of St. Gallen, and Dr. Laura Hering from the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg were honored with this year's Otto Schmidt Prize.
