Caroline von Humboldt Award 2022 goes to Corinna Coupette

The Selection Committee has unanimously decided to grant the Caroline von Humboldt Award 2022 to Dr Corinna Coupette based on her excellent academic career and her exciting interdisciplinary research.

The former research associate of the Otto Hahn Group for Financial Regulation at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance is an open science enthusiast exploring the intersection of computer science and law.

Her primary research theme is data, with emphases on exploratory methods for data analysis, expressive representations of graph data, and transdisciplinary projects. She strives to create high-quality datasets and to develop domain-specific methods to measure, monitor, and manage legal systems. Her legal dissertation "Legal Network Research: Modelling, Quantification and Visualisation of Relational Data in Law", which introduces legal network science, was awarded the Bucerius Dissertation Award in 2018 and an Otto Hahn Medal in 2020.

Corinna Coupette studied law at Bucerius Law School and Stanford Law School, completing her First State Exam in Hamburg in 2015. She obtained a PhD in law from Bucerius Law School and a BSc in computer science from LMU Munich, both in 2018, as well as an MSc in computer science from Saarland University in 2020.

Corinna is currently a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, where she pursues her PhD in computer science at the department „Algorithms and Complexity“ and regularly teaches computer science and programming to audiences from other disciplines, including lawyers. She is also a fellow at the Bucerius Center for Legal Technology and Data Science, where she advances legal data science, and a guest at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance.

The Caroline von Humboldt Prize is awarded annually since 2010. It is the first research award at Humboldt-Universität Berlin to be granted exclusively to women, and it is one of the highest endowed awards of its kind in Germany. The prize is awarded to an excellent postdoctoral researcher from Germany or abroad in recognition of their scientific achievements and successes to date and serves to support a scientific project. The prize money is intended to be used for a research project conducted at Humboldt-Universität.
