Otto Hahn Medal for Jonathan Schindler

Otto Hahn Medal for Jonathan Schindler

At the 74th Annual Meeting of the Max Planck Society, Dr Jonathan Schindler was honoured with the Otto Hahn Medal for his already several times awarded dissertation "Geldwäschegesetzgebung und Steuerrecht".

In 2023, a total of 29 young scientists are being honoured with the Otto Hahn Medal for their exceptional scientific accomplishments in the course of their doctoral theses. The ceremonial presentation of these medals took place during the Section meetings on the opening day of the 74th Max Planck Annual Meeting in Göttingen.

Our former research associate Jonathan Schindler received the Otto Hahn Medal for his dissertation "Geldwäschegesetzgebung und Steuerrecht". His doctoral thesis deals the question of the extent to which the instruments originally aimed at money laundering can be and are actually used for tax purposes. In doing so, he explores what limits are set by fundamental rights and which means the state may use to screen its citizens in the service of tax justice.

The significance of Schindler's work is shown by the five awards he has already received for his dissertation. In 2022 he received the 136th Esche Schümann Commichau Foundation Sponsorship Award, the Albert Hensel Prize 2022 of the German Tax Law Society, the Faculty Prize of the Law Faculty of the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München, the Science Prize of the Munich Chamber of Tax Advisors and the Sponsorship Prize of the Streck Mack Schwedhelm Zehnt Academy.

Jonathan Schindler joined the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance as a student assistant in 2012. From 2017 to 2020 he completed his doctorate in the Department of Corporate and Tax Law under the supervision of Prof. Dr Dr h. c. Wolfgang Schön. He then went on to complete his legal clerkship at the Higher Regional Court of Munich.

Schindler's dissertation “Geldwäschegesetzgebung und Steuerrecht unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Zugangs der Finanzbehörden zu den Datenbeständen der Zentralstelle für Finanztransaktionsuntersuchungen“ has been published by Dr. Otto Schmidt in 2021 in the series Rechtsordnung und Steuerwesen.
