Quo Vadis the European Fiscal and Social State?

Max Planck Law Fellow Ruth Mason and Max Planck Directors Ulrich Becker and Wolfgang Schön presented ongoing work on the future of the European Union at a workshop convened by Professor and Director Joseph H.H. Weiler at New York University’s Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice on 4/5 May 2026.

Leading experts on European Law and Policy gave insightful comments on topics like the concept and inconsistencies of EU citizenship, solidarity as a central feature of the EU Treaties, and the joint-decision trap in European tax and budgetary law (Francesca Bignami, Rosalba Famà, Lilian Faulhaber, Daniel Halberstam, Daniel Hemel, Nicolas Jabko, Paul Linden-Retek, Peter Lindseth, Roberto Mastroianni, Dagmar Myslinska, Fernanda Nicola, Miranda Stewart, and the current Senior and Junior Emile-Noel-Fellows of the Jean Monnet Center). This event reflects work under the joint project “The Future of the Fiscal and Social State in Europe” pursued by the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Policy and the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance, both based in Munich.
