Corinna Coupette joins Aalto University

Dr. Dr. Corinna Coupette, a former doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance, was appointed Assistant Professor of Computer Science by Aalto University in Helsinki. From September 2024, she will build up the Telos Lab to conduct research at the intersection of law, technology, and society.

Corinna Coupette studied law at Bucerius Law School and Stanford Law School (2010–2015) and computer science at LMU Munich and Saarland University (2015–2020). She completed her PhD in law (Dr. iur., summa cum laude) in the Department of Business and Tax Law at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance in 2018 within the framework of an Otto Hahn Group and her PhD in computer science (Dr. rer. nat., summa cum laude) in the Department of Algorithms and Complexity at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in 2023. For her legal dissertation, titled “Legal Network Science”, Corinna was awarded the Bucerius Best Dissertation Award in 2018, and the Otto Hahn Medal for Outstanding Scientific Achievements of the Max Planck Society in 2020, and her interdisciplinary research profile was recognized by the Caroline von Humboldt Prize for Outstanding Female Junior Scientists in 2022.

The overarching goal of Corinna’s research is to understand how we can combine code, data, and law to better model, measure, and manage complex systems (e.g., contemporary information societies). To this end, she explores novel ways of connecting computer science and law, such as using algorithms to collect and analyze legal data as networks or formalizing and implementing legal and mathematical desiderata for responsible data-centric machine learning with graphs. Before joining Aalto University, Corinna spent ten months as a Digital Futures Postdoctoral Fellow at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Stockholm Resilience Center. She is a Fellow at the Bucerius Center for Legal Technology and Data Science and a Guest Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. She will remain a Research Affiliate at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance.
